SIBO Symptoms and the Low FODMAP Diet: What to Eat for Relief

SIBO Symptoms and the Low FODMAP Diet: What to Eat for Relief

If you’ve been experiencing long-term bloating, cramping or unpredictable digestion and haven’t found lasting relief no matter what you try, SIBO may be playing a role.

What is SIBO?

SIBO, or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, happens when bacteria that live in the large intestine start multiplying in the small intestine instead. This can impact nutrient absorption and digestion, leading to symptoms such as gas, bloating, fatigue, nausea and even skin issues or brain fog.

But don’t take our word for it on whether or not you -have- SIBO. Testing and diagnosis should always be done with a qualified practitioner.

In the meantime, diet can still play a significant role in managing symptoms and supporting your recovery. The most common dietary approach for SIBO is a low FODMAP approach.

What is a Low FODMAP Diet?

The FODMAP in a low FODMAP diet stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These are found in common ingredients like garlic, onions, dairy, and wheat-based products.

For someone with SIBO or similar gut sensitivities, these foods can trigger inflammation and discomfort.

In turn, a low FODMAP diet emphasizes simple, easy-to-digest foods and gentle cooking methods such as boiling or simmering. While this might sound restrictive, it’s not making you eat less or choose from far less; you’re just choosing foods your body can easily digest and use to your benefit.

Bone Broth and SIBO

When your digestive system needs a little help, bone broth can be one of the most supportive foods, or add-on ingredients, to turn to. Our chicken and beef broths are rich in collagen, amino acids and minerals that help repair gut lining, calm inflammation and nourish your systems while being gentle on digestion.

For those following low FODMAP or even OBS (Overactive Bowel Syndrome) recommendations, broth and broth-based meals can provide warmth, comfort and full nourishment without triggering symptoms. (No belly-angering onion or garlic in these broths!)
